The most popular steel grades for shipbuilding are plain carbon and mild steel because they have a variety of advantageous characteristics that make them particularly well suited for maritime engineering. High yield strengths and typical tensile strengths between 490 and 620 MPa are some of them.
Ferrous and non-ferrous metals, polymers, GRP (glass reinforced plastics/fiberglass), and wood are the four materials utilised in shipbuilding. 90% of material used in shipbuilding is specifically mild or plan carbon steel.
