The Manufacturing Process of Carbon Steel Pipe

Steelmaking

Forming the Pipe

Seamless Pipe Production: A hollow tube is made from a steel billet by heating and piercing. Then the tube is stretched and elongated into the final shape using rotary or extrusion methods. For high pressure applications, seamless carbon steel 

pipes are preferred as they do not seam to weaken the pipe.

Welded Pipe Production: In the welded pipe process, cylindrical shapes are formed out of steel sheets or plates and their edges are welded together to form a pipe. Their lower production cost makes these pipes commonly used in a variety of applications.

Heat Treatment

The next step is heat treatment after forming the pipe. The process is to heat the pipe to a particular temperature and then cool it to the desired mechanical properties, such as strength and flexibility. The heat treatment also helps eliminate internal stresses and improve the material’s durability.

Finishing

Carbon steel pipes are then finished by coating, cleaning or galvanising. A protective covering provides protection against corrosion in highly humid or chemically exposed environments. Depending on the application the pipes may also be cut to specific lengths or threaded.
