Eckhardt Steel & Alloys manufactures and supplies Alloy Steel P22 pipes for boiler and high-pressure piping systems. The primary reason for using P22 in boilers and high-temperature service is its chromium-molybdenum alloying, elevated-temperature strength, creep resistance, and oxidation resistance. Wall thickness runs from 2.0 mm to 14 mm, with sizes from 1/8" NB to 30" NB, across seamless, welded, ERW, and EFW forms.

The ASTM A335 P22 seamless pipes are available in round, square, and rectangular profiles, with plain, beveled, or threaded ends. An A335 P22 pipe holds strength at service temperatures where standard carbon steel weakens. Buyers checking with ASTM A335 Grade P22 pipe suppliers should confirm the schedule and length before ordering, as tolerances shift by schedule.

Alloy Steel P22 Seamless Pipe Specifications

Specifications for these pipes follow ASTM A335 and ASME SA335, covering size, thickness, and end finish. The table below lists the working range for seamless pipe orders.

Schedules SCH 40, SCH 80, SCH 160, SCH XS, and SCH XXS are all schedules up to 12 mm in thickness.

Key Benefits of Alloy Steel P22 Pipes

The chromium-molybdenum composition of P22 gives it a set of properties that carbon steel pipe cannot match at high temperatures. These are the main ones buyers ask about:

  • - High-Temperature Resistance
  • - Superior High-Pressure Performance
  • - Enhanced Chromium and Molybdenum Composition
  • - Excellent Corrosion and Oxidation Resistance
  • - Good Weldability and Formability
  • - High Strength-to-Weight Ratio
  • - Long Service Life and Cost Efficiency

Manufacturing Process of Alloy Steel P22 Pipes

Production starts with a billet, pierced and hot-rolled into a hollow shell, then sized to the required outer diameter and wall thickness. Seamless tubes follow this route, while welded pipes are formed from a plate fused along a longitudinal seam. The pipe is subjected to the heat treatment required by ASTM A335 for Grade P22, followed by dimensional and applicable non-destructive testing to relieve internal stress. Each length is then checked for dimensions, and non-destructive examination is carried out according to the applicable specification and purchase requirements before dispatch.

Industrial Applications of ASTM A335 Grade P22 Pipes

Plants running high-temperature, high-pressure processes specify this grade for boiler tubing, heat exchangers, and process lines. Common end-use sectors include:

  • - Power Generation Industry
  • - Petrochemical Industry
  • - Oil and Gas Industry
  • - Chemical Processing Industry
  • - Refining Industry
  • - Boiler and Heat Exchanger Manufacturing
  • - Pharmaceutical Industry
  • - Pulp and Paper Industry
  • - Food Processing Industry
  • - Aerospace and Defense Support Infrastructure

FAQs

ASTM A335 P22 covers seamless ferritic alloy steel pipe with 1.9–2.6% chromium and 0.87–1.13% molybdenum, minimum yield strength 205 MPa, for high-temperature service in power and process plant applications.

Carbon 0.05–0.15%, Manganese 0.30–0.60%, Chromium 1.90–2.60%, Molybdenum 0.87–1.13%, Silicon 0.50% max, Sulphur 0.025% max, Phosphorus 0.025% max.

Yes. P22 is the standard for superheaters, boiler headers and high pressure steam piping with mechanical strength and oxidation resistance for continuous service to 600 deg C.

OD ½ inch NB to 24 inch NB in Sch 40 to Sch 160. Other than typical, custom wall thicknesses and lengths are available.

Yes. Every cargo is delivered with mill test certificates, EN 10204 3.1, for chemical composition, mechanical properties and heat number traceability. Third party inspection results are available on request.

P22 is a 2.25% Cr and 1% Mo alloy compared to 1.25% Cr and 0.5% Mo in P11. This gives P22 enhanced creep strength and oxidation resistance at temperatures above 550°C. P11 can be used for moderately high-temperature service, while P22 is intended for more severe heat conditions.
